Videogames in Movies - (1991) - Terminator 2
One of the best movies ever made, no matter the genre! Until recently I had forgotten there was this little scene which is total late 80's early 90's "mall culture". It was the place to hang-out man! Especially if you were a teen boy and they had an arcade.
It's cool that they picked "Missile Command" - even though it was from 1980 and might look "primitive", it was the quintessential apocalyptic videogame. Fits like a glove with the nuclear bomb themes of T2. Terrifying videogame... as when all your cities are destroyed, the entire screen lights up with "The End" specifically... not just "Game Over." It's a masterstroke.
The second major game gives it the more "modern" arcade feel, with a ...

    • @vghchannel
      @vghchannel 4 дня назад

      Running on an emulator but with some blur to better simulate a composite display. These old machines weren't programmed with pixel-perfect accuracy like we have today, there was blurring in the old displays... so it helps to have some of that present. BUT, I imagine if you see a lot of flicker it's because you're looking at a real output where the refresh rate isn't matched to your recording device.

    I picked apart the source code for this program to teach myself BASIC on my dad's Apple II plus. It was written in Integer Basic, so it would only load if you booted from the System Master Diskette and it took me a long time before I understood the difference between Applesoft and Integer BASIC. I was trying to figure out forever how Applevision was able to put text on the screen in Graphics Mode while none of my programs in Applesoft BASIC could.

    • @vghchannel
      @vghchannel 18 дней назад

      Thanks for sharing! It's hard to understand if you didn't grow up in this time how even fiddling with BASIC and all that was fascinating. The first Apple II actually came only with Integer BASIC built in, and you could switch to INT BASIC mode OR go into the monitor to type in these cryptic commands for loading cassettes and stuff. It was in1979 that the Apple II+ began shipping with AppleSoft in ROM, and then you had to load Integer BASIC in instead. So yeah, all those special Steve Wozniak graphics commands he built into integer basic was no longer the initial boot-up mode. Pretty cool you remember flipping between the two and learning how even BASIC versions could be quite different in feature sets!

    I have a question about a weird character - I forgot the ASII value, I think it is 768-something, but you can get the character on a program line. Just type 100 REM and press FCTN 0 and enter. EDIT 100, and it will pull up the line as 100 REM, and that pinkish character. WHAT IS THAT CHARACTER? What use did the CTRL characters have? If you get so many lines in a program, or programs, you can actually get weird characters with CTRL. You can actually use CALL CHAR to permanently change a CTRL character into what you want it to be. Me and my cousin actually created a cursor that doesn't blink for CTRL C. Oh, and how do I make an "INPUT ERROR" without the WARNING? I used to be fascinated by the error messages, and the one error I could never make was "INPUT ERROR", just the WARNING: INPUT ERROR: TRY AGAIN". Was there a way to get the WARNING: INPUT ERROR" without the TRY AGAIN?

    • @vghchannel
      @vghchannel Месяц назад

      interesting! I don't know at that level, because my friend had the TI-99/4A so I didn't program it extensively. My guess is that after all the letters, numbers and symbols they also programmed in an entire bank of character graphics that you're landing on with your commands. Not sure how color is selected, but you could look up an ASCII map of the TI and maybe see? Perhaps the INPUT ERROR line was never used in basic? Could be only for programming in other languages, or assembly, or? Dunno... possibilities abound.
